Literally hundreds of fly fishers have caught their first and/or biggest trout under his guidance, and hundreds have been ushered into the world of fly fishing through his streamside schools. Flytrek offers a wide range of tuition options including 1-day and weekend schools, and a 4-day streamcraft school in the high country. High country guiding and tour packages are included among a dozen different trip packages, including horseback fly fishing. Rod guides on virtually all Victorian waters north and south of the Great Divide, including the Goulburn River and tributaries above and below Lake Eildon, all waters flowing into and including the Mitta Mitta River, all waters originating in the Vic. Alps including the Ovens, Kiewa, King, Wonangatta and Macalister Rivers and their tributaries. In Tasmania the Central Highlands lakes, and the Midlands streams & lakes. In NSW the Snowy Mts & Monaro lakes & streams, including Lakes Eucumbene and Jindabyne, the Eucumbene, Thredbo, Kydra, Kybeyan, Maclaughlin & Delegate Rivers, and many other local creeks. Rod began his fly fishing career as a youth on the Goulburn River at Nagambie in Victoria, graduating to more exotic locations in following years through the 1950s & 60s, culminating in hanging out his 'guide' shingle in 1989. He has fished widely throughout all trout-bearing states in Australia and NZ, as well as the USA where he caught his largest trout to date, a magnificent 17.25lb Rainbow from the Green River.
